San Diego, CA - Amsoil/Chaparral/Napster Honda’s Mike LaRocco nabbed his third podium of the 2005 season, bringing his Honda CR250R home in the #3 spot before a packed Qualcomm Stadium crowd. Yamaha’s Chad Reed took the win, with Suzuki’s Ricky Carmichael second.
Yamaha’s David Vuillemin crossed the line in fourth, with LaRocco’s teammate Kevin Windham rounding out the top five. And in an exciting, blast-from-the-past performance, Team Honda’s Jeremy McGrath succeeded in snagging the main event holeshot, and he’d go on to bang bars with the front-runners in the early stages. He’d wind up finishing 10th.
LaRocco’s finish bumped him back into the #3 spot in the 250 title hunt as well, where he now sits with 119 points, 49 back of series leader Carmichael and just 19 back of the second-place Reed. K-Dub, meantime, lies three points behind LaRocco.
The thrills were no fewer over in the 125cc West action either, as three previous round winners, including Amsoil/Chaparral/Napster Honda’s Billy Laninovich, all got out in front early and looked to be setting up an exciting three-man dogfight.
Team Honda’s Andrew short, however, had other plans, and he made his way around Laninovich on lap three and held down the third position to the checkers. Laninovich went on to claim fourth, while fifth place went to Amsoil/Chaparral Honda Thomas Hahn, making it a trio of Red Riders filling out the top five.
Next weekend the THQ AMA Supercross Series heads down south to Atlanta and the Georgia Dome, where the 125 East Region Series will resume with its second round.
